Islamists capture 65% of the vote in elections in Egypt triumph

CAIRO (AFP) - Islamists defeated Liberal rivals in the opening phase of the first election in Egypt since the fall of Hosni Mubarak, the figures show on Sunday, with a choice of four voters Salafi extremists.

Islamist parties won 65 percent of all votes cast for parties in the first round of parliamentary elections last week, while the main secular liberal coalition managed only 13.4 percent.

Among the Islamist voices, the Moderate Party of Freedom and Justice (CLE) of the Muslim Brotherhood won 36.6 percent, followed by the Al-Nur Salafist extremist party with 24.4 percent and moderate Al-Wasat, with 4, 3 percent. "We welcome the choice of the Egyptian people," the spokesman CLE Sobea Ahmed told AFP. "Egypt now requires all parties to work together to get it out of its crisis."

The Brotherhood has been widely expected to triumph in the first free election in decades. It is more organized political group in the country and is well known for his charity work and opposition to Mubarak's 30-year plan.
