Syrian-Americans call no-fly zone in the middle NATO summit
While anti-war protesters rallied against the involvement of
NATO in conflicts around the world on Sunday, a group of Syrian-Americans met
in Chicago to call on NATO to enforce a fly zone over their homeland.
Activist claim more than 12,000 people were killed by the
Syrian government since protesters took to the streets in March 2011. The
conflict has recently spilled over into western neighbor Syria, Lebanon.
Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told AFP on Monday
that the Cold War, the wartime alliance of Western countries "did not
intend to intervene" in Syria, although "the Western powers helped
overthrow Libya Muammar Gaddafi last year.
"We strongly condemn the behavior of the Syrian
security forces and their crackdown on the Syrian people and we urge the Syrian
leadership to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people," he
said.
