Prospects for Vietnam-France ties under the new French government

In a recent interview to a  News correspondent in Paris, Claude Blanchemaison, who was French ambassador to Vietnam from 1989 to 1993, stressed that the country occupies an important geographical position in Asia, with an attractive environment for businesses.

"I think the newly elected government of President Francois Hollande will pay close attention to it, and improve relations with Vietnam in the framework of Asia-Europe cooperation," he said.

He noted that, in 2013 and 2014, there will be many exchange activities between the two countries, and the formation of a new government will bring about positive changes in bilateral relations.

It is very important for France to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam, which is now a strong economic growth and a good competitive environment. In fact, many French companies are interested in Asian markets, including China, India and Vietnam, the French diplomat said.

Blanchemaison, a French representative of the Asia-Europe Foundation, revealed that President Francois Hollande will attend the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Laos in November where he is expected to focus on building relationships with south Asian countries, including Vietnam.

François Mitterrand was the first French president who has visited Vietnam in February 1993 and his visit has been instrumental in the expansion of bilateral relations, said Blanchemaison.

He confirmed that the foreign policy of the French Government always attaches great importance to promoting relations with Vietnam, which is on the fast track for development.
