Reagan went on to survive the attack even though he was reportedly near death while in the hospital while Hinckley went on to marry Jodie Foster and live on a rainbow. At least in his own mind. Reagan would later say that God spared his life so he could fulfill a greater purpose, like selling illegal arms to Nicaraguan rebels or absentmindedly sucking on jellybeans in the Oval Office. But none of that really matters. What matters is that the whole affair became a part of Reagan’s legacy, one more reason his devotees loved him and thought that he was specially chosen by God to lead America back to glory following the depressing ‘70s.
